About National Silver Academy (NSA)
The National Silver Academy (NSA) is a network of post-secondary education institutions (PSEIs) (i.e. ITE, polytechnics, universities and arts institutions) and community-based organisations that offer learning opportunities that are subsidised for seniors. Seniors and PRs aged 50 years and above can look forward to attending short courses and bite-sized courses that are exam free. For courses run by community-based organisations, the final fee payable – for both Singaporean and Permanent Resident seniors – takes into account the support given by the government to community-based organisations to develop and offer the short courses.

About The Singapore Association for Continuing Education (SACE)
The Singapore Association for Continuing Education (SACE) is a registered charity with MOE. It offers over 80 courses under the National Silver Academy, most of which are highly subsidised for Singaporeans & Permanent Residents aged 50 and above. SACE serves the continuing learning needs of adults of all ages.

Objective Equiping seniors with the means to develop core muscles and strengthen somatic balances as a result of osteoarthritis. Overall, exercising with poles has benefits such as improved fitness & toning, confidence, balance, posture, offloading joint weights, fall prevention, pain relief, spinal conditioning, functional performance, improved mood, decreased depression, managing COPD, motivating social togetherness; with the bonus of increased caloric expenditure. The systematic use of NW or Urban Poling can reduce or delay the use of walking canes, walkers and wheelchairs. NW has also been found to be an effective exercise to deal with chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and the improved blood pressure has helped to counteract mental ill-being and sleep disorders.
Description Achieving an upright posture that is critical to the prevention of the forward-head motion typical in the ageing process so as to prevent falling due to imbalance. Age-related postural hyperkyphosis is an exaggerated anterior curvature of the thoraic spine, sometime referred to as Dowager’s hump or gibbous deformity. This condition impairs mobility and increases the risk of falls and fractures. Participants will directly experience and gain confidence and courage to increase their ROM as they stand upright, step forward L&R, knowing their breathing is strong and their stamina has increased.
